Laws for drink driving
Drivers who commit a low-range drink driving offence will lose their licence on the spot under laws introduced in May 2019. Under the laws a driver who commits a low range drink driving offence will be fined $572 and lose their licence immediately for three months.
The laws also apply to first time drug presence while driving offences that are detected on the roadside by NSW’s drug testing (MDT) program. The penalties are a fine and three month licence suspension.
From December 2018 first time mid-range offenders will be required to have a interlock device fitted to their car for two years. Repeat offenders will face vehicle sanctions, such as licence plate confiscation and vehicle impoundment.
Those who choose to defend a low-range charge in court could face maximum penalties of $2,200.
