Who can access a criminal record?
Government departments can get access to the criminal records of people who apply for a government job. Employers of people in jobs which require certain kinds of licences (a real estate agent) or require you to be registered (a pharmacist) can also get access to an applicant’s criminal records.
Most other employers and members of the public cannot legally get access to criminal records. Attempting to obtain or obtaining a copy of a criminal record if you are unauthorised to do so is an offence under the Criminal Records Act 1999.
